A Vibrant Tribute: International Montessori School-Erbil Celebrates Kurdistan Flag Day

On December 17, students, faculty, and staff at The International Montessori School-Erbil (IMS) came together in a colorful and patriotic display to celebrate Kurdistan Flag Day. The event, an annual tradition at the school, served as a powerful reminder of the region’s identity, history, and the shared values of peace and resilience.

Raising the Colors

The day began with a formal flag-raising ceremony in the school’s main courtyard. Against the backdrop of the iconic red, white, and green stripes and the shining golden sun, the school community stood for a moment of silence to honor the martyrs of Kurdistan, followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem, "Ey Reqîb."

Education Through Heritage

True to the Montessori philosophy of nurturing "global perspective and responsible citizenship," the event was more than just a ceremony; it was an educational journey. Students across all grade levels participated in activities designed to deepen their understanding of the flag’s symbolism:

Red: Representing the blood of martyrs and the continued struggle for freedom.

White: Symbolizing peace and equality.

Green: Representing the lush nature and landscapes of Kurdistan.

The Yellow Sun: A symbol of the source of life and light for the people.

A Festival of Culture

The school grounds were transformed into a sea of traditional Kurdish attire as students wore beautifully embroidered Kras u Kurtek and Jile Kurdi. The celebrations included:

Traditional Performances: Students participated in playing instruments of "Ey Reqib" anthem music

Artistic Expressions: Younger students engaged in flag-themed art projects, creating hand-painted banners and sun emblems.

Poetry & Speeches: Student representatives delivered heartfelt speeches, reflecting on what the flag means to the younger generation as they look toward a bright future.

As the flags continue to wave over the IMS campus, the event stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to honoring Kurdish heritage while providing a world-class international education.
